Selah Cub Scout Pack 276
Report by Clay Graham and photos by Amanda Graham / Selah Adventures – Selah Community & Tourism.
On Sunday April 12th, 2015 Selah Cub Scout Pack 276 held a free Rocket Launch event that was open to Kindergarten through 3rd graders within the Selah School District Boundary. This was held at Lince Field next to Wixson Park.
Fletcher Scaife from the Boy Scout of America office in Yakima brought a few rocket types out to show the Cub Scouts and guest the different ways to make things move. The Cub Scouts and guest all got a chance to shoot the rockets off.
The first launch was call “Stomp Rockets”. This rocket went by air pressure from someone stomping on the airbag part of the launcher.
The second type launch was by air pressure from a bicycle pump into a soda bottle with water in it. The rockets flew different heights by the amount of water in the bottle.
The third type launch were model rockets with engines. The Cub Scouts build the model rockets earlier in the week for this event. About the launch; The engine burns and propels the rocket, the propellant in the engine burns out, the rocket coasts upwards and finally arcs over at the peak of its flight where a small ejection charge pops the parachute out so the rocket can float back to earth safely.
This was a very fun thanks to all who came.
Thank you to all the volunteers. Thank you to the Selah School District for the use of Lince Field. A special thank you to Boy Scouts of American Skookum District Executive Fletcher Scaife for coming out with all the rockets.
